The Grainger County Sheriff’s Office has released additional details regarding a fatal shooting that occurred June 19 near the Williams Creek TWRA Access, also known as Lays Bridge.

Investigators said a large group of people were gathered in the area when 60-year-old Billy Nicely approached the group. Witnesses told officers that Nicely and the suspect became involved in a physical alterca- tion before the suspect allegedly shot Nicely.

According to authorities, the suspect and another individual left the scene in a Honda Civic. The vehicle has since been located and secured as evidence.

Deputies responded around 8:50 p.m. and found Nicely deceased from gunshot wounds. Officials said a suspect has been identified but has not been taken into custody.

Anyone who was near Black Fox Bridge between 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. on June 19 is asked to contact the Grainger County Sheriff’s Office at 865-828-3613. The investigation remains active and ongoing
