Morristown moving towards redistricting wards

Morristown City Administrator Andrew Ellard is encouraging residents to participate in an important public input process regarding the City’s upcoming ward redistricting efforts.

Due to a change in the City’s charter adopted in 2024 to comply with new state law, the structure of municipal elections in Morristown will change beginning this fall. Under the new system, election of the four (4) wardbased City Council seats will only be voted on by the voters in each of those respective wards.

Previously, all voters could vote for every council seat regardless of ward. There is no change to election format for at-large City Council seats or the City Mayor.

As a result of this transition, maintaining balanced ward populations becomes essential. Redistricting ensures that each ward contains a similar number of residents, preserving the principle of “one person, one vote” so that each resident’s vote carries equal weight across the city.

Recent population growth in Morristown has occurred unevenly across different areas, creating imbalances among the current wards.

The redistricting process aims to correct these disparities while also carefully considering demographic factors to ensure that minority representation is not negatively affected.

A draft of a proposed redistricting map was presented to the City Council on May 5 and has been made available on the City’s official website and social media platforms. Residents are encouraged to review the proposal and submit feedback.

The public comment period will remain open through noon on May 14. Written comments may be submitted via email to CityClerk@MyMorristown.com.

Additionally, printed comment forms and physical copies of the proposed maps are available at City Center for those who prefer to review materials in person.

Following the comment period, a summary of public feedback will be presented to the City Council on May 15 at 9am at the Public Works Facility on Durham Landing.

Based on this input, a final proposed map will be prepared for consideration and possible adoption at the regularly scheduled Council meeting on May 19.

City officials emphasize the importance of community participation in this process and encourage all residents to review the proposal and share their perspectives.
