Three Hawkins Schools receive $15K Grant from Morgan Wallen Foundation

Three schools from the Hawkins County School district have received grants from the Morgan Wallen Foundation. Bulls Gap, Carters Valley Elementary and Surgoinsville Middle schools each received $5,000 for their music programs. In 2024, Clinch School was also a $5,000 recipient and was able to purchase instruments.

The three schools were able to purchase much-needed instruments, audio, video and lighting equipment as well as a chorale riser.

Teacher Beth Lynn from Carters Valley Elementary said, “These items enhance our music program, and the students can now all be seen during a concert. We were able to purchase some items that help our students learn about musical elements too. We are grateful for this gift.”

Music teachers Benjamin Mahan from Bulls Gap and Josh Fritts from Surgoinsville Middle School were equally enthusiastic.

“Our band program is in the early stages so having this funding has allowed us to purchase instruments that we otherwise could not. Our students are extremely excited about music and now we can help grow that love. I am truly blown away by this generous gift,” Mahan said.

Music Teacher and Musical Theater Director, Josh Fritts shared his excitement.

“Our small school has a unique student band that performs rock, pop, country and bluegrass using guitars, drums, keyboards, etc., as well as other students interested and performing in musical theater,” Fritts said. “This gift has given us the opportunity to expand our program and purchase so many instruments and equipment that we desperately needed.”

“Music is an important part of education,” Hawkins County Director of Schools Matt Hixson said. “This grant offers schools opportunities to expand programs and instill or enhance the student’s love of music. Foundations such as this are significant partners for our schools and we greatly appreciate their support.“
