Cocke woman facing Animal Cruelty charges
A Cocke County woman was charged with four counts of Cruelty to Animals Friday.
Stephanie Ann Smith, 52, was taken into custody Saturday on the cruelty charges.
According to a report, Cocke County deputies, along with Cocke County Animal Control, were called to a residence on Pack Way where a dog was found dead and several other dogs were malnourished. Property owner Betty Woods told deputies that she leases the property to Smith. There were 12 dogs in chain-link-style kennels with no roofs, where the ground was wet and muddy. Other conditions included frozen water buckets as well as empty water and food containers. A large water storage tank located nearby had no water in it and there is no running water on the property.
Food bins were empty with a trash can on the scene indicating that food had been given at some point.
Of the 12 dogs located, one was found dead, three were found to be malnourished. One of the malnourished dogs had a large prolapse on its rear area. Woods told deputies that she had contacted Smith multiple times about the dogs, including the dead dog and the lack of water. Smith told Woods that she would be bringing water the next day, with a date stamp of January 30. According to social media posts, Smith was in California.
On Saturday, Smith was taken into custody.
