Halo School of Cosmetology opens

Halo School of Cosmetology is a new option for those looking to get their Cosmetology or Nail Tech certificate or even learn to be an instructor.

The new school, located at 210 E Economy Road in Suite D, strives to provide students the best education possible, by giving students a hands-on education.

Heatherlee Maple, coowner, discussed her reasoning as to why she decided to open the new school.

“I have had so many students come to me and tell me they aren’t learning or retaining the information at the beauty school they’re in,” Maple said. “My passion for educating students is what drove me to open this school.”

“I want the students to leave school feeling confident in their knowledge to do hair. I want them to be able to walk into a salon and feel comfortable to do any style a client asks them to do.”

Maple emphasized that the school’s main focus is providing students with hands-on education.

“We are hands on teaching,” she said. “We teach students everything they need to know about hair cutting, color and all of the latest styles and techniques.”

“We will also teach students how to work on different hair types and textures so they can be versatile with their work.”

Faithie Marie, coowner and director, echoed Maples statements about the necasity of teach students to work with all hair textures.

“It is important as cosmetologists to be able to work on all types of hair,” she said. “Not all cosmetology schools teach students how to work with tighly textured hair.”

“We will have all types of mannrquins with different hair textures so students will know how to work on all hair types.”

Marie discussed the talented staff that will be instructing students at the school.

“Our instructers are not only passionate about the field of cosmetology but also the field of education,” she said. “Our staff is dedicated to building confidence in our students.”

Jessie Bennett, an instructor, explained that although students will be attending beauty school, it will mirror a standard education.

“They are going to get graded and tested just like they would in a classroom,” she said. “We expect them to pass it before we move them on so we can ensure they are retaining the information we teach them.”

“Although they are culminating their hours, we want them to have those hours plus know exactly what they are doing.”

Bennett explained the school’s goal is not just to provide great education but also to help students make memories with the staff and their peers.

“Beauty school should be educational and fun. We will give you both a strong foundation and memories that will last a lifetime,” Bennett read from the school’s mission. “We want to create a family atmosphere here and make everyone feel comfortable and welcome here.”

The school will offer three different courses that vary on completion time.

The cosmetology program will meet Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will require students to complete 1,500 school hours which can be completed in 45 weeks.

This course is broken down into General, Physical and chemical learning. Students will learn things such as local city, state and federal laws regarding health and safety in a salon, proper procedures for shampooing and rinsing hair and given hands-on experience in learning the art and techniques of individual hairstyling.

Students are required to complete 200 hours of instructional time before working on clients.

“They basically have to have 200 hours of work on their books, but they won’t be sitting in the classroom the entire time,” Bennett said. “They will sit in my classroom for 2 hours in the morning and then the rest of the time they will be out on the floor doing hands-on work.”

“So they will learn what is in the book and then actually apply that knowledge out on the floor. They are getting both visual and educational hands-on learning.”

The Nail Technician Course will meet Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will require students to complete 600 school hours and this course can be completed in 16 weeks.

It’s similar to the cosmetology program where the course is broken down into General, Physical and chemical learning.

Students with the instructor course will meet the same times as the other courses, but will only have to complete 300 hours over a 6-month period.

However, this course will have training in lesson planning, practical applications and will prepare graduates for entry-level employment in a beauty school.

What sets the school apart is its dedcication to educating student and its use of the Pivot-Point system, an up-to-date and state-of-the-art cosmetology curriculum.

“Everyone learns better when there is consistency and structure,” Marie said. “Our lessons plans were put together with months of planning. We planned our lessons out to the week, day and hour. There isn’t one minute that will go by that our students won’t be learning.”

“We wanted to bring something different. We will teach with pivot point that stays up date with trends as the beauty industry changes. After completeing course students will get to keep their books but will also be able use the pivot program two years after their completion.”

The school will also host an open house Saturday June 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. so prospective students and the community can see its facility and meet the instructors.
