Wampler shines in East’s win over Greeneville

Morristown East sophomore Ella Wampler had the kind of night most players only get to dream about as she led the Lady Hurricanes to a 15-0 pounding over Greeneville Friday at King Park.
Wampler did it all for Coach Sydney Davis’ team.
She tossed a no-hitter on the mound and was even more impressive at the plate as she smacked two home runs among three hits and knocked in eight runs. Wampler also gloved three balls hit back up the middle and got outs on each of them in a great performance.
One night after being shut out by cross-town rival West, the Lady ‘Canes hammered out 13 hits with Wampler and Hudson Cloninger getting three apiece. Unlike Wampler’s power performance, Cloninger’s safeties all came on well-placed bunts.
Jaycee Hamilton added a home run and single for East while Kylie Rader also had two hits.
Wampler walked three and struck out five in registering the mound decision over Leah Phillips who lasted just one inning and gave up five hits and five runs.
Both teams are now 3-6 for the season.
Davis said, “Ella had a great night. It was an awesome all-around performance. I don’t know what else you could ask from a player.
“I thought the girls were ready to play tonight,” she added. “We hit the ball well in the first inning and every inning after that.
“Ella threw well, the defense backed her up and we couldn’t ask for a better night.”
East took control quickly. Keeley Shisler led off the bottom of the first by hitting the ball over the right fielder’s head for a triple. Cloninger followed with a bunt single before the next batter grounded out.
Wampler then singled right back up the middle for the only run East would really need. Kaleah Davis walked to load the bases and Hamilton singled in the second run.
Rader had a sharp base hit to left and all three runners scored as the ball got past the left-fielder and rolled all the way to the fence.
The Lady Hurricanes got a single marker in the second as Shisler led off with a base on balls and scored when Wampler grounded out to the shortstop.
Hamilton started the third with a line drive home run that got out of the park quickly. Rader walked and Adasia Davis had a base hit. Hailey Hall’s sacrifice bunt moved the runners up and Shisler’s sacrifice fly scored the first run of the inning.
After another bunt by Cloninger, Shelley had a hit and Wampler slugged a long three-run shot to center field to push the margin to 12-0.
The Lady Greene Devils loaded the bases with one out in the fourth on a pair of walks and a hit batter but couldn’t get on the scoreboard. Wampler got the next batter to ground to shortstop Hamilton who threw the runner out at the plate. Davis then made a great running catch in center to end the threat.
East ended it by the mercy rule in the bottom of the frame with one out. Cloninger reached on a fielder’s choice and Shelley was hit by a pitch.
Wampler then crushed another three-run round-tripper, her fifth of the season, into the street behind the left field fence.
Next up for the Lady ‘Canes is a trip to a tournament in Gulf Shores, Ala., where they will play at least six games starting on Monday.
