SEVIERVILLE – Grainger broke out of a losing streak by breaking out their big bats on Friday as they had a season-high in runs, a 16-2 romp over Cumberland County.
Braylnn Sell had the big hit of the day as he connected on a three-run homer that helped snap a four-game slide by the Grizzlies. He finished with four RBIs on the afternoon. Kade Lucas was red-hot at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and he wasn’t the only Grizzly to drive in multiple runners. Bryson Davis and Brayden Christian also had a duo of RBIs in the big win over the Jets.
Cumberland County jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first but the Grizzlies responded with a five-spot in the top of the second inning. Sell’s three-run bomb scored himself, Christian and Davis to make it 3-2. The score stayed that way until Lucas’ line-drive to left plated Bryson Bennett and Jaxon Maxey. Grainger put the game away in the sixth with 11 runs. After Maxey scored on a wild pitch, Ryland Burchett did the same and then Christian brought home two wins with a double. Davis’s sacrifice fly brought Christian home and then the scoring parade continued as pinch runners Isaiah Kyle and Gavin Yates scored, Connor may came around on a Burchett single and later he scored when Brady Smith reached first base with a hit. Lucas came home on a based-loaded walk and the final run for the Grizz was another bases-juiced pass to Davis that plated Nolan Wallace to produce the 16-2 final.
Lucas, May and Christian all hit doubles for Grainger. The Grizzlies had luck on the base pads as they stole seven bases led by Burchett’s two. Cadon Cameron got the win for Grainger on the mound as he pitched four innings with two earned runs and four strikeouts. Wallace threw the final inning and fanned two of the three batter he faced. After being plagued by errors in the last four games, Grainger played clean against the Jets with no miscues.
