ROUNDUP: Patriots win district title for first time since 2017

After surviving in extras to open the tournament against Sevier County, Jefferson County ran the table in the District 2-4A Tournament and beat William Blount, 7-1 to capture its first title in nine years.

Caleb Franklin went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Jackson Ormonde drove in two runs, Brody Carr drew three walks, while starter Drew Molter earned the win, going 5.1 innings with five hits and six Ks.

The Patriots offense started slow but heated up in the fourth, breaking a 1-1 tie with an RBI groundout from Sean Young. With the lead, JCHS never looked back and scored five runs between the fifth and sixth innings.

Franklin hit a sac fly to make it 3-1 in the fifth, and Ormond followed with a two-RBI single. Franklin the scored two in the next inning with a single of his own. The Patriots host D-B on Friday to open the Region 1-4A Tournament.

Volunteer 10, Cherokee 4

The Chiefs season came to a conclusion on Friday as they lost to their cross-county foes. The Falcons used a four-run fourth inning to break open a tie game. Sawyer Housewright was 4-for-4 for Cherokee and Porter Owen hit two doubles.

Washburn 12, Cosby 0

Mathew Harville allowed only one hit to the Eagles as Washburn pitched the shutout. Nolan Harville, Bryson Clay and Gavin Kincaid had two RBIs each.

Carter 8, Cocke County 5

The Fighting Cocks’ season came to an end, falling to Carter in the loser’s bracket final. Oaklon Cameron led Cocke County with a two hit, three RBI performance.

Softball

Grainger 8, Sevier County 4

Grace Lincoln and Shylo Williford combined for 10 strikeouts as the Lady Grizzles won their regular season finale. Jaylee Hayes smacked a pair of doubles and Mckinley Mills added another. Grainger will host the district tournament at The Den this week.

LCA 8, Grace Christian 3

Birdie Russell finished the game with four RBIs that included a homer and a triple as the Lady Lions cruised to victory. Avery Ramey went the distance and had five strikeouts and added a double at the plate. McKinley Grubb drove in three runs for LCA.
