Stewart elected Hawkins County Sheriff
Hawkins County will be governed by new leadership come September.
Scott Stewart, who is the assistant director of the Third Judicial District Drug Task Force, is adding Sheriff to his duties.
Stewart captured 3,405 votes to secure the republican nomination for Sheriff.
Current Chief Deputy Tony Allen finished second with 1,896, followed by Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper David Good with 1,676. Roddy Miller, assistant chief with the Church Hill Police Department, finished with 1,142 votes followed by current Hawkins County Commissioner Chad Britton with 276 votes.
Stewart will be the first new Hawkins County Sheriff in 16 years. Current threeterm Sheriff Ronnie Lawson will retire after his term ends in August.
Rogersville businessman David W. Linkous won Republican nomination for County Mayor. Linkous received 2,957 votes to finish ahead of Church Hill Alderman and former county com- missioner Keith Gibson, who received 2,078 votes. Current County Mayor Mark De-Witte, who was running for a second term, finished with 2,005 votes while Kenneth William Stapleton received 1,235 votes.
In the County Clerk’s race, long-time Assistant County Clerk Cindy Rutledge secured republican nomination with5,848 votes to best Austin Ray Bradley, who received 1,649 votes.
These races has no democratic opposition, so both Stewart, Linkous and Rutledge will assume office in September.
In County Commissioner races, both District 1 commissioners will resume office in September. John Gibson received 446 votes while Syble Vaughn Trent received 348 votes. In District 2, Jeff Barrett received 742 votes while Randy Patterson received 654 votes. In District 3, Stacy Vaughn ran unopposed, receiving 729 votes.
In District 4, incumbent commissioner Josh Gilliam received 1,046 votes and fellow nominee Warren C. Bishop received 670 votes. District 5 incumbent Glenda Petty Davis received 968 votes while Hawkins County EMA Director Jamie Miller also secured nomination with 954 votes. Commissioner Nancy Barker will continue to serve as District 6 commissioner with 838 votes, as will Edwin Cope, who received 623 votes to receive republican nomination.
District 7 commissioner Robbie Palmer secured 825 votes to receive republican nomination. The second candidate in District 7 came down to incumbent Bobby Lee Jinks receiving 638 votes to edge former commissioner Michael Herrell by 22 votes.
These commissioner races have no democratic opposition, so the winners will take the oaths of office in September.
In school board races, District 4 School Board Member Hannah Speaks was reelected with 669 votes to best former school board member Lamora “Tecky” Hicks, who finished with 625 votes. Debbie Gladson Shedden won nomination for school board with 579 votes over challenger Travis Charles, who had 504. Incumbent Alina Gorlova received 697 votes to defeat Carl “Ketron” Bailey, Jr. with 519.
Bob Larkins received 531 votes to secure nomination to fill out an unexpired term on the board of education.
Road Superintendent Danny G. Jones received 6,014 votes to secure the republican nomination. Jones will face Independent Church Hill Public Works Director Jason Light in August.
