Trojan Talk ~ Spring is in the air at Morristown West

As we come to the end of February, we have much to look forward to.
Spring sports have arrived! We will meet new freshmen and their parents Thursday March 9 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium. The Talent Show will be approaching soon as well as Prom. We will also begin registration for new year’s classes for current students and upcoming Trojans. Thursday, Mar. 16, West View Middle registration will start at 3:30 p.m. and Lincoln Middle registration will be at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 20.
This Wednesday, Mar. 1, will be the deadline for FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). In order to qualify to be considered for financial aid in college, students must fill out the FAFSA. Some colleges require students to fill out the CSS profile, as well.
This week, we started WIDA testing. Students who are in morning ESL classes tested throughout the week; students who are not in an ESL class but are also served will be tested in the Library along with fourth period ESL classes this upcoming week. Students who are testing will report to the Library in the morning and will eat first lunch on Monday, Feb. 27, and Tuesday, Feb. 28. WIDA testing includes four subparts, including the speaking section. The speaking subpart will be administered afterwards, in smaller groups. The Library will be closed this whole week due to testing.
Seniors, if you ordered graduation supplies, Josten’s will be here to deliver them on Wednesday, Mar. 22. They will be in the cafeteria during third period to distribute them; students can stop by their table during their lunch.
Cap and Gown portraits for Seniors will be taken Tuesday, Apr. 11, in the auditorium from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Seniors who intend on having their Cap and Gown pictures taken will need to sign up and schedule an appoint in their Google Classroom; no sitting fee is required if students already paid the sitting fee for Senior portraits.
Student Council will host auditions for the “Trojans’ Got Talent” talent show on Thursday, Apr. 6, 2023, after school. We would love to have a variety of talents: singers, bands, musicians, magicians, dancers, comedians, etc. All are welcome to audition! The talent show will take place in the auditorium on Friday, Apr. 21, 2023 during third period. Cash prizes will be awarded. A google form will be posted to sign up for auditions in the following week.
This year, Prom will be Saturday, Apr. 29. If you decide to bring a guest, there are important steps and guidelines in place due to safety concerns. A form must be filled out prior with their information and an interview may be conducted. Forms are available in the library from Ms. Long. Upcoming scholarship: The Don’t Drive Drowsy Scholarship is available for graduating high school seniors.
The mission of the Don’t Drive Drowsy Foundation is to educate teens on the dangers of driving while sleep deprived and the benefits of a good night’s sleep every night. Applicants have the opportunity to receive $1000. The deadline to apply is March 6, 2023.
Seniors, the Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare will be awarding two scholarships to high school students in Hamblen County and the surrounding counties. Each scholarship will be $750.
To qualify, you must be planning to attend college or a postsecondary tech school and enter into a “health related” field. Applications are available in your grade level counseling office Google Classroom. The deadline is Apr. 1, 2023.
In addition, Students who are interested and are planning to attend Walters State Community College, there is a $500 scholarship available. The scholarship is only for students who plan to pursue a career in the healthcare field. Applications are available in the counseling office google classroom.
The deadline is April 1, 2023. Students must turn in the applications to Mrs. Gillet by the deadline.
In sports news, congratulations to two West High wrestlers for competing at the state level this past week. Sophomore Ian Carr and Junior Brodey Huskey represented the Trojans in Franklin, Tennessee. Best wishes to the men’s soccer team as they hold a preseason match versus Tennessee High March 3 at home at 7:00 p.m. Track and field will hold a scrimmage March 7 in Morristown, TN at 4:00 p.m. Baseball will start 28-Feb at Union County at 5:30 p.m. March 2 they play Davy Crocket at home at 5:30 p.m. March 3 they face Elizabethton away at 5:00 p.m.
Spring break will be at the end of next month. For Dual Enrollment students, Walters State will be on spring break the week of Mar. 6, 2023; classes will still be going on at West.
