SEVIERVILLE – Morristown West made quick work in their district opener on Tuesday evening, taking care of Sevier County with a 10-0 win in five innings.

With the victory, the Lady Trojans moved to 4-3 on the season and are 1-0 in District 2-4A play.

At the plate, Aviah Bunsic and Jaelyn McDaniel led the way for West with home runs. Bunsic’s home run came in the top of the first and was a two-run shot. McDaniel hit hers in the fourth, a solo bomb.

“I thought that we did a good job,” Morristown West coach Heather Kelley said. “I think that Sevier County is improving and getting better. But, I am proud of our girls for starting district play 1-0. Aviah (Bunsic) and Jaelyn (McDaniel) hitting home runs was good to see and got our offense going.”

Other contributors at the plate for West were Aubrie Messer with a two-RBI double and Briony Bunsic with two hits and an RBI.

Along with her damage at the plate, Briony Bunsic also got the start in the circle and pitched all five innings. She struck out 10 while allowing just two hits.

“Briony had another good night tonight,” Kelley said. “She’s doing a good job for us offensively, as well. She’s being a really good leader as just a sophomore.”

Things started quick for West in the game as Briony Bunsic singled to lead things off, and Aviah Bunsic blasted a two-run homer. The Lady Trojans added one more run in the inning as Kaylee Dyke singled in Mikaela Olodey to make it 3-0.

In the second, the Lady Trojans broke the game open with five runs, all coming with two outs. Following back-to-back singles from Briony and Aviah Bunsic and a walk to Olodey to load the bases, the Lady Trojans picked up two runs on a Sevier County error. Then, Messer made it 7-0 with a two-RBI double. The final run came on another error that allowed Messer to score.

Following a scoreless third, the Lady Trojans added one in the fourth on McDaniel’s solo shot and one in the fifth on a groundout by Briony Bunsic that scored Cadence Beaver.

Morristown West will stay in conference play next, as they battle cross-town rival Morristown East on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Last season, the two teams battled five times with the Lady Trojans winning three of them.

“We’re excited for the opportunity,” Kelley said. “The East-West games are always good games, and we look forward to going over there and competing.”
