On a cold, bitter afternoon at Frank Lorino Park, both Morristown East tennis teams crushed the Volunteer Falcons to open the 2023 season. The Hurricanes won 9-0 while the Lady Canes defeated the Lady Falcons 5-4.
For the Hurricanes, it was an easy pathway to victory as Volunteer was only able to play two players. With default wins coming at the top of the lineup, more young, new players for Morristown East got opportunities to demonstrate their skills. Ayden Stuffel won decisively at #5 singles. Behind him at #6 singles, Diego Garcia breezed to a 8-0 victory. In doubles, the team of Adam Turner and Samuel Chance won 8-3 to conclude the match.
The Lady Hurricanes joined in the fun to win their first match of the season. Senior Polly Jett set the standard at the top of the lineup winning 8-2 over Maggie Bice. Fellow senior Jocelyn Betancourt defeated Reagan Lipe 8-3. Lastly, in singles, Lakin Burnside beat Gracelynn Barner 8-0 to bring total victories to three. With three victories and two defeats, the Lady Hurricanes needed only two doubles out of three to defeat the Falcons.
The doubles pair of Polly Jett and Finley Surber crushed at number #1 doubles winning 8-3. To bring the Lady Hurricanes over the 5 match hurdle was the team of Burnside and Betancourt who won 8-3 as well.
Both teams host Cocke County this afternoon at Frank Lorino Park. Matches will begin at 4:15 PM and are free and open to the public.
