Morristown West’s Briony Bunsic flirted with perfection Thursday afternoon at King Park as she pitched the Lady Trojans to the District Two 4-A championship with a 12-0 rout of cross-town rival East in five innings.
It gave West a sweep of the city championship series over East after a 7-0 victory earlier in the season.
Bunsic allowed just one baserunner as the Lady Trojans wrapped up their second straight league title and did it in a way that most likely has never been done before.
West finished the district with a perfect 6-0 record and for the first time, did it without being scored on in a league game. It was the 18th win against eight losses for Coach Heather Kelley’s Lady Trojans.
The Lady Trojans scored early and often in dealing East its 13th loss against eight wins. The Lady Hurricanes finished second in the district with a 4-2 mark.
Bunsic permitted only a bunt single by Keeley Shisler leading off the fourth inning. She struck out 11 as East put the ball in play just four times during the game.
West put four runs on the scoreboard in the first and added three in the second. After going down in order in the third, the Lady Trojans scored three times in the fourth and plated their final pair in the top of the fifth.
The Lady Trojans totaled 10 hits with Aviah Bunsic leading the way with three. Kaylee Dyke added a pair of doubles and catcher Jaelyn McDaniel chipped in two singles.
Kylie Rader went the distance in taking the loss. She walked three and struck out seven. Four of West’s runs were unearned as East had four errors on the day.
The Lady Trojans will now host the district tournament when it begins in early May.
Coach Kelley said, “It was a great win for our program and we’ll get to host the tournament again this year.
“I thought Bri had another great night,” she added. “She’s thrown that way for us in every district game.”
“We hit the ball tonight from top to bottom and played really well on defense,” Kelley said. “We got hits in key situations when we had chances to score.
“I thought it was important for us to get off to a good start. When we can score four runs like that in the first inning we have to feel pretty good about our chances the way Bri has been throwing the ball.”
Kelley closed by saying, “I’m so proud of the girls and hope we can take this momentum on into the district tournament.”
East coach Sydney Davis said, “We didn’t hit the ball and couldn’t field it. We didn’t do much of anything tonight.
“Kylie didn’t pitch great but did a pretty good job but we didn’t help her out any with our defense.”
Davis said, “I hope we play with a better mentality. I told the girls we have to learn to hate losing more than we like winning because right now we are very complacent and don’t really seem to care.”
Bunsic was in total control all the way. She fanned two in the first and fifth and all three batters in both the second and third. She went to a three-ball count just once in the game but came back to strike out that batter.
In the top of the first, Bri Bunsic doubled to left to start the game and sister Aviah followed with a hit that went off the glove of the leaping third baseman.
McDaniel knocked in the first run when she reached on a fielder’s choice and MiKaela Olodey walked to load the bases. Dyke then doubled in two runs and scored herself on a hit by Hailey Milton.
In the second, Bri Bunsic reached on an error with one out and Aviah walked, McDaniel and Messer had base hits and Dyke rapped her second double as the lead grew to 7-0.
Aviah Bunsic had the only hit in the three-run fourth when East committed two errors.
The final two scores came as Bri walked and scored on a hit by Aviah and McDaniel knocked in the final marker with a base hit.
