Tennessee College of Applied Technology Morristown held its Spring 2023 Graduation ceremony Thursday evening at Manley Baptist Church. Graduates who complete in both fall and spring terms participate in this event, in which diplomas or certificates are presented to 255 students.

TCAT-Morristown President Susanne Cox welcomed the large crowd and commented on the important contributions family and friends of graduates make to help students succeed. Cox recognized staff and faculty and described them stating, “They represent the very best in their fields of study and are dedicated to sharing their knowledge and expertise in preparing these students for the workforce.”

These students have been busy learning their technical skills, but many of them are also members of the National Technical Honor Society,” Cox said. “The National Technical Honor Society is an organization committed to recognizing academic excellence and positive attributes among career and technical education students. Our graduates who have achieved this designation have maintained outstanding academic grades, excellent attendance, and desirable worker characteristics. In honor of this achievement, graduates are adorned with silver stoles to recognize this remarkable accomplishment.”

In addition, Cox mentioned the students who attended and competed in the SkillsUSA Tennessee State Leadership conference where over 1,500 students, instructors, education leaders, and industry partners join to conduct career competition events to showcase the best of the best in the state.

“TCAT Morristown students won 10 Gold medals, 5 Silver medals, and 6 Bronze medals,” Cox announced. “The Gold medal winners will compete this summer in the National SkillsUSA competition in Atlanta. We are extremely proud of your accomplishments!”

Hamblen County Superintendent of Schools, General Arnold Bunch, delivered the keynote address. He began by congratulating Cox and the entire TCAT team.

“Garnering recognition from the Tennessee Board of Regents as the best; the No. 1 Technical College in the state is a remarkable accomplishment,” Bunch said. “This recognition is a testament to the quality of the instruction, a testament to not only the quality and professionalism of the instructors but also the instructors’ care and belief in the importance of each student, and a testament to the vision of the leadership to ensure the courses taught remain relevant as technology constantly changes and to ensure each individual graduates with a skill set ready to go into the workforce.

“You have demonstrated perseverance and dedication. You have been challenged, and I suspect there were times you thought about giving up – I know I did,” Bunch told the graduates. “But you put the time, energy, and effort into successfully completing the journey you started and have completed your coursework. Each of you is now well-prepared to play a critical role in continuing this area’s economic sustainment and growth. Your graduation is very important to you and your families, but it is also critically important to the long-term viability of this community. Without skilled workers, our community cannot continue to grow and thrive. Congratulations! Each of you should be very proud of this accomplishment.” He concluded by challenging the participants to commit to continuous learning.

Immediately following graduation, the practical nursing program held a pinning ceremony for 31 nursing graduates that included pin dedications and the Florence Nightingale Pledge.
