Cocke County beats Stone Memorial, sees weather delay against McNairy Central in state tournament

Cocke County won its first-round game over Stone Memorial on Tuesday, but it trailed McNairy Central at the end of the fifth on Wednesday before a lengthy weather delay in the TSSAA Class 3A State Tournament.

If they fell to McNair Central, the Lady Red moved down to the loser’s bracket and sit a loss away from elimination.

First Round: Cocke County 2, Stone Memorial 1

The Lady Red got their first ever state tournament win in walk-off fashion.

After being tied at 1-1 since the third inning, Jaylee Lane sent home Brookelyn Strange for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Strange accounted for both of Cocke County’s runs and went 2-for-3 at the plate. She hit a triple in the second inning and scored on a groundout from Hailee Hartsell.

Hartsell and Ellie Proffitt kept the Stone Memorial offense at bay in the circle. Hartsell pitched four innings with three Ks and allowed seven hits and one run.

Proffitt pitched three one-hit innings and struck out five. She allowed a hit to her first batter, but she took down her next five to set up the Lady Red’s walk off.

Second Round: McNairy Central 6, Cocke County 2 (Delayed)

The Lady Red had just one hit in the second inning before the weather delay hit, but it was a big hit. Chloe Niethammer ripped a double that scored two to put Cocke County on the board first. However, McNairy Central broke through Proffitt with a fiverun third inning.

Through five innings, McNairy pitcher Bailee Shelton struck out nine, and she had two hits and an RBI at the plate.

Carlee Shelton had three hits and two RBIs, including a triple.

The loser of the game played again on Wednesday against the winner of Springfield and Stone Memorial, while the winner awaits the result.
