Virginia man wanted for murder nabbed in Church Hill

A man who was charged in a second-degree murder in Sullivan County was nabbed Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of a Church Hill business.

According to information from the Kingsport Police Department, police, along with assistance from several other agencies, arrested Levi Carter, 37, for Second-Degree murder.

The homicide investigation began in Scott County, Virginia on Monday night. At 11:32 p.m., Monday, the Scott County Virginia Sheriff’s Office reported that Carter had been seen in Weber City, Virginia, which is across the Tennessee border from Kingsport.

Carter allegedly stole a vehicle in Scott County, Virginia, and fled from law enforcement. A pursuit was initiated by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia Conservation Police. The pursuit continued along Yuma Road and into Tennessee, where officers from the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office, Mount Carmel Police Department, and Church Hill Police Department joined the effort.

In the “Be on the Lookout” Bulletin issued by Scott County, Carter was considered “armed and dangerous.”

Carter was taken into custody by Kingsport Police at around 2:38 p.m., Tuesday afternoon.

According to Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Carter allegedly stole a vehicle in their jurisdiction and attempted to flee law enforcement. At around 2:17 p.m., Tuesday, a pursuit by Scott County deputies began in Virginia with Carter entering Tennessee via Yuma Road into Hawkins County. Mount Carmel, Church Hill and Hawkins County Sheriff’s officers joined the pursuit at this time.

“The pursuit concluded in Church Hill, where Carter was apprehended and taken into custody,” the KPD statement said.

KPD went on to thank the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Mount Carmel Police and Church Hill Police Departments for their assistance.
