Smokies drop 2 of 3 weekend games to close series with Clingstones

COLUMBUS , Ga. – Sunday’s win allowed the Knoxville Smokies to head back home after a tough weekend against the Columbus Clingstones.

Columbus rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk-off the Smokies Friday night, 6-5. Knoxville trailed Columbus 4-1 going into the fifth but Carter Trice took care of that with one swing of the bat as his three-run blast tied things up at 4-4. The Smokies took the lead in the seventh when a wild pitch allowed Alex Ramirez to score. The home team won when Ethan Workinger singled in Ambioris Tavarez and Lizandro Espinoza for the 6-5 final tally.

Brooks Caple had six strikeouts in six innings of work as the Knoxville starter. Marino Santy was tagged with the loss as he gave up the key hit in the ninth.

Columbus won Saturday’s contest 6-2. The Smokies led 2-1 after Ramirez reached on a fielding error that allowed Karson Simas to come home and Owen Ayers’ sac-fly brought Ramirez home. The Clingstones claimed the lead on a David McCabe homer in the bottom of the third inning and never lost it again in the 6-2 victory. Columbus starter Garrett Baumann had 11 K’s to keep the Smokies’ bats quite most of the day. Luis Rujano (1-1) took the loss for Knoxville.

The Smokies won Sunday’s tilt 4-3 with a lategame rally. Ramirez singled home Ariel Armas in the top of the third for the first Knoxville run. Cal Conley hit a two-run homer in the fourth for Columbus and Kevin Kilpatrick found the deepest part of the park in the bottom of the eighth inning for an inside-the-park homer that put the Clingstones on top 3-1.

The lead would not last for the home team, however, as Edgar Alvarez unloaded on a three-run bomb to right field that put Knoxville ahead 4-3. Santy redeemed himself from Friday’s contest as he pitched the ninth with two strikeouts to gain his first save of the season. Jackson Kirkpatrick (2-0) picked up the win for the Smokies.
