Man found naked in traffic, charged

A panhandler in Newport was charged after running through traffic naked and intoxicated Friday.

According to a report from the Newport Police Department, Daniel Eugene Dailey was charged with Public Intoxication, Public Indecency and Aggressive Panhandling.

At 7:36 p.m., Friday, Newport Police officers were called to West U.S. Highway 25/70 and Exit 432 of Interstate 40 where a man, identified as Dailey, was aggressively begging for money and running into traffic. While police were in route, Central Dispatch told police that they had received multiple 911 calls about Dailey, who was allegedly naked and bathing in a nearby creek.

A NPD Captain found Dailey in a creek and was putting his clothes back on. Dailey was acting erratically, sweating and had an odor of alcohol. After being placed into custody, a search of Dailey’s bag resulted in recovery of an open bottle of whiskey. Dailey was taken to the Cocke County Jail.
