First, talk a little about your background, whether that be within local government or in your professional career, and how it informs your ability to be a leader in your community.

My background speaks to both what I can bring to the job of Commissioner, as well as how it sets me apart from other candidates. I spent 30 years in public service to taxpayers at the national, state, local and international levels. My training and experience as an Attorney and Leadership Strategist enables me to: Advocate and negotiate to accomplish priorities; facilitate productive working relationships between the cities and the County by using my proven team building, conflict handling and communication skills; analyze complex budgeting and planning materials; lead the effort to implement, as well as prepare, purposeful land use and spending plans; and dialogue effectively with all county residents and across party lines. The job of County Commissioner is not defined by labels or affiliations or issues of national politics. Instead, the role is guided by principles of leadership and service to address everyday needs of all County residents, not only those who live in certain areas of the County. This means that I will ask, not tell, residents what is important to them — their families, businesses, homes, and ways of life; I will listen to their answers and take their concerns seriously. I will hold open forums monthly. I will serve all County residents with no other agenda.

What made you pursue this specific seat, or run for reelection in 2026? Why now?

I am running because the residents of Loudon County deserve a proactive Commission that truly represents and serves the community. We can, and must, do better.

What sets you apart from the candidates you’re currently running against, or makes you the best possible candidate for the seat you are pursuing?

Living in Loudon County for over 10 years, I see increased congestion, vacant storefronts, shrinking farmland, stressed infrastructure, growing community divide, questionable spending, and mismanaged growth. I hear resident concerns about protecting their way of life, local environment, and financial futures. These realities plus the lack of clear, accessible information have led me to offer the voters an option. As Commissioner, I will press for more proactive planning and decision making in connection with each of the Commission’s responsibilities.”

In your opinion, what is the biggest issue facing the average Loudon County voter today, or the biggest issue facing your specific constituents?

In my view, shortcomings in how Commissioners govern lead to inadequate handling of issues such as school construction, growth, infrastructure strain, land use/zoning challenges, and tax rate changes. For example, significant issues like whether the County should keep or sell the Matlock Bend Landfill, build a new school, or raise tax rates highlight core problems in governing. First, how much Commissioners engage their constituents in the information gathering and decision-making processes; and second, whether the Commission accesses and analyzes verified data in making decisions.

What’s your opinion on government spending, maybe highlighted by sectors of county operations the Commission could be spending more or less money on?

Spending discussions and decisions must be based on verified data and focused on achieving intended results. Too often money is spent without thoughtful processes on the front end and a lack of monitoring along the way, so actions are reactive rather than proactive. Spending requires prioritizing the most critical services to the majority of the residents in the community. I focus on key priorities: Does law enforcement have sufficient resources? Are our fire departments fully funded? What steps are needed to ensure our infrastructure is keeping pace with development? Are we supporting learning initiatives and our teachers for the future? Are business and housing growth strengthening revenue? How can the County attract new businesses to reduce retail leakage while preserving quality of life? It is imperative that whenever possible we use resources that are already available and funded by outside sources to provide benefits to residents. For example, the Opioid Abatement Fund provides funding to the County designated to improve community health by supporting programs involved with treatment, recovery, and prevention. I ask: Has the Commission taken full advantage of awarding these funds? Similarly, what was the Federal COVID money spent on in each of the districts in the County? I am well prepared to lead proactive change to reverse mismanaged growth and spending.”

How do you plan to handle growth within this community, as Loudon County continues to see a spike in its population?

Another example is the critical issue of Loudon County’s growth rate and the extent to which the Commission takes steps to manage it. Addressing growth involves complex issues and decisions, including land use planning, annexation, and zoning. I will press to update the old Land Use Plan. I support modulated expansion. Balancing growth demands understanding priorities with a clear vision for the long-term plan along with practicality for the short term. For me, planning is not the answer in and of itself. Too often paralysis sets in once a plan is approved. The Commission must take the necessary next steps to implement decisions. I will make sure we consider the findings and recommendations in the Loudon County Economic Development Strategic Plan, develop an implementation plan, and take appropriate actions to move forward, using existing County resources. This effort will demand collaboration among city and county leaders. Based on my training, skills, and experience, I am fully prepared to lead this effort as a member of the Loudon County Commission.”
