Culture Club: WSCC to host event celebrating Micronesian culture

It begin in the 1970s with just a few voyagers, travelling halfway around the world, four men from Micronesia coming to Morristown College to pursue an education.

Today, more than 1,000 Micronesians call Morristown and Hamblen County their home.

On Thursday, April 30 at 4 p.m. Walters State Community College will present the Island of Micronesia, an event to share cultures. There will be authentic cuisine, traditional singing and dancing and the opportunity to learn about the rich heritage and beauty of the Micronesian Islands.

The event will be in the International Lyceum and the Lyceum Café.

Located in the Northwest Pacific, Micronesia consists of roughly 2,000 islands, include islands located within the Republic of Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and U.S. territory Guam.

The region is known for its diversity of culture, deeply influenced by Christianity but retaining historical elements like the stone currency on the Island of Yap. English is the official language of the Federated States of Micronesia but over 20 languages are spoken including Chuukese, Pohnpeian, Kosraean, and Yapese.
