Volunteer rallies in seventh for 5-2 win over Lady Grizzlies

RUTLEDGE – Volunteer scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning and they proved to be the game winners as the Lady Falcons downed Grainger 5-2 at The Den on Tuesday.
With the score tied at 2-2, Maddie Holder smacked a double to right field that brought two runs home.
Vol added an insurance run when Danni Guinn tripled to right to score Holder.
McKinley Mills reached on a two-out error in the bottom of the seventh to keep hope alive but the Lady Grizz were unable to get any additional runs home.
Both of Grainger’s runs came in the home-half of the first inning as Emma Hodge singled to bring Jaylee Hayes across and Destanee Davis came home on the throw.
The Lady Grizzlies had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the home half of the fourth inning with the bases loaded and no outs but nothing came of it.
“That’s the story of our season as we just can’t hit the ball,” GHS head coach Ben Williford said. “We can’t catch it, we can’t throw it, we can’t do much of anything right now.”
One of the highlights for the Lady Grizzlies was a defensive web gem Kaylee Sturgill made in the top of the sixth inning to keep the game knotted at 2-2.
“That was a big play by her and it made up for an error she had earlier in the game so it was good to see her confidence not slope off after that one mistake. She kept playing hard and that was good to see.”
Grainger hosts Cherokee Thursday night.
