Holston Electric Cooperative begins construction on Whitehorn Creek Generation Plant

ROGERSVILLE — Holston Electric Cooperative has begun construction on a small local energy project near Whitehorn Creek in Bulls Gap that will turn gas currently being burned off into electricity for cooperative members.

The Whitehorn Creek Generation Plant will use ethane gas that is currently flared by a nearby pipeline operator.

Instead of allowing that energy to go to waste, the cooperative will use it to help power homes and businesses in the community.

“This is a practical way to make use of a resource that already exists and would otherwise be wasted,” said Jimmy Sandlin, Holston Electric General Manager. “It will help us keep costs stable for our members while continuing to provide reliable electric service.”

The project is expected to generate electricity at a lower cost than Holston can purchase power from the Tennessee Valley Authority, promoting future rates stability.

Currently, TVA limits the amount of generation local power companies can provide to their membership.

Holston officials emphasized that all required environmental and construction permits have been secured prior to beginning work.

Further, Holston is not affiliated with the crypto-mining facility, Exotic Ridge.

“We understand that people may have questions, especially as construction activity becomes more visible,” stated General Manager, Sandlin. “We are committed to being open about the project and to operating it safely and responsibly.”

The cooperative is always available to provide additional details and answer questions from the community.

Construction and testing are expected to take place this spring, with full operation anticipated later in the year.
