On the Hop: Food on Foot distributes Easter boxes

A Lakeway Area Easter tradition this past weekend helped to ensure that those in need had food to eat on Easter Sunday, as well as on into the coming week.
Food on Foot, along with volunteers of All Saints Episcopal Church and Southeast Industrial Construction gathered at Food on Foot’s 1 Berkline Drive location to distribute food for that Easter dinner and many meals more. Both Caesar and regular salad packages were also made available. Other foodstuffs such as pancake mixes, cornbread mixes and cake mix were part of the boxes.
The All-Saints group bought loaves of bread so that families could make ham sandwiches with the hams provided by SEI. Kayla Trachsel represented SEI and founder Kenny Noah.
“She has helped me at Christmas,” Carolyn said. “She has frozen to death during Christmas during his distribution.”
“I want to thank you all,” Carolyn said. “All Saints has bought all of the bread today. That is a blessing. The people can slice the ham and make sandwiches with the bread.”
Groceries, such as canned goods, a gallon of milk, Easter candy and more were provided to families who had registered for one of three food box giveaways to be held throughout the year, at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Among the volunteers were Food on Foot Board Treasurer Terry Winstead. He brought along his family, including wife Jennifer and daughters Kendall, Hannah and Emma from their Cleveland, Tennessee home. All are originally from Morristown, but left in 2019. Terry has served as Food on Foot treasurer for many years in spite of living in Southeast Tennessee.
“Food on Foot has impacted our family since the very beginning,” Terry said. “We started helping (Carolyn) Jarnagin serve when our oldest son, Tyler, who is now 23, was very small. Our children remember coming here when they were tiny. They learned to serve through Food on Foot. That’s what it’s all about.
“Carolyn and Bobby are the most special people ever,” Terry said.
“Terry keeps us all straight financially,” Carolyn said. “I’m so thankful that you all are going to get to see the big day today.
The All Saints Church crew serves Food on Foot the first Saturday of every other month.
Volunteers range from a few people to as many as 30, representatives said. At least 10 volunteers on most months.
All who received meal boxes on Saturday were required to register for the last few weeks prior to the distribution. Each family received a loaf of bread, a box of snacks, food box, Caesar salad, a canned ham and milk.
Distribution was broken into two rows to help expedite the process.
Children of those getting the food boxes received Easter plush toys and Easter baskets. Those children with birthdays received an individual birthday cake from Rich’s. There were also baskets for adults who didn’t have children.
Morristown Police Department helped to coordinate traffic so that those leaving Food on Foot would be able to get back onto Morris Boulevard with no safety issues.
