Humane Society to hold donation event Saturday

Morristown Hamblen Humane Society has empty shelves and many mouths to feed, but this Saturday people can donate supplies at Petsense at 110 W. Morris Boulevard on Saturday to help relieve pressure.

While adoptions continue and animals leave the shelter to loving homes, it’s still “puppy season” and many dogs and cats have been brought in. And the shelter relies on donations to keep things going.

“Our pet pantry is barren, it’s completely empty,” MHHS Executive Director Carlee Stevenson said. “Any food that anybody wants to bring, we would be happy to take it. (We use) the Purina Dog Chow, any kind of flavor.”

The Stock the Shelves event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• Pet food

o Purina Dog Chow (any flavor) preferred

o Any brand accepted for pantry

o Fancy Feast canned kitten food

• Paper towels

• Blankets and towels

• Puppy pads

• Laundry detergent and bleach

• Cat and dog toys

One special request was for plastic “kiddie” pools. Larger sizes are needed for larger dogs for comfort and enrichment during the warmer weather coming up.

The need for donations comes during an adoption push that is seeing heavy turnover right now. Stevenson said that the shelter has adopted out 93 dogs in March but was still short of their goal of 120 adoptions.

“This is the highest adoption number that we have seen in the month of March since, I think it’s been 15 years,” Stevenson said.

The large number reflects both success and need — every kennel at the shelter is full and several have dogs sharing space when able.

Stevenson said there’s a group of dogs coming in from vet stays that are expected to be adopted, but she hopes the community will step up and help them get to that 120 number so more animals can be cared for.
