Dr. Matt Drinnon, assistant superintendent for Hamblen County Schools, has been selected be the Greeneville Board of Education to be director of Greeneville City Schools.
Drinnon was selected from an original pool of 10 candidates and won the School Board’s vote 3-2. Now, the contract negotiation process will begin.
Drinnon said he’s excited for the opportunity be part of a school system that has had unparalleled success in the region. He expressed appreciation of the culture of the school district and the opportunity to join a school system that is really moving forward.
“I told the folks over there during the interview process that in the last 15 years, I’ve only applied to one place outside of Hamblen County and that’s Greeneville City,” Drinnon said.
Despite the opportunity that is ahead of him, Drinnon admitted that it will be bittersweet to leave the system to which he has devoted most of his professional life including stints as principal at John Hay Elementary, head of the Human Resources Department and as assistant superintendent.
“I’ve worked here since 2000,” he said. “I’m really gonna miss the people that I’ve worked with. I’ve built a lot of deep roots here in Hamblen county and have a lot of mixed emotions.
“While I am excited about the opportunity, I’m gonna miss the friends and co-workers from over the years.”
Superintendent of Hamblen County Schools Arnold Bunch said the announcement is bittersweet for the district as well.
“We are elated for he and his family on his much deserved selection for the position,” he said. “But, we also hate to lose this remarkable education leader from Hamblen County Schools. His selection for this leadership role is fantastic for the students, parents/guardians and community of Greeneville. Matt will do a remarkable job as he guides Greeneville City Schools and I look forward to working with him in his new role.”
The job posting originally wanted the applicant to begin May 1, to give the new director time to work with retiring Director Shane Starnes. Drinnon said the negation process will lock down the start date.
