Roundup: East withstands late West Ridge rally for first district win

BLOUNTVILLE — After a delayed start to District 1-4A action due to weather, Morristown East traveled to West Ridge and picked up its first district win, 5-4, on Thursday.

With the win, the ‘Canes improved to 3-8 and 1-0 in district play.

Maddox Winstead and Brett Carden led East with a pair of hits apiece, with Maddox adding two RBIs and a walk. Landry Winstead also had a hit, an RBI and two walks in the leadoff spot.

Parker Setsor started the game and threw five innings, allowing three runs. At the plate, Setsor hit the ‘Canes first homer of the season. Chace Pimienta earned the win in relief, while Carden earned the save with a strikeout on his lone batter.

East started the evening hot as Landry Winstead drew a leadoff walk, and despite being followed with two outs, Carden singled and Maddox Winstead drove both of them home with a single to gain a 2-0 lead.

Setsor led off the third and hit a homer to left field for a 3-0 East lead. Landry Winstead followed in the next inning with an RBI single.

West Ridge came storming back in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases to open the frame followed by a single and two sac flies to cut the East lead to 4-3, later tying it with a single in the bottom of the sixth.

The ‘Canes followed by loading the bases with two walks and an error. East only got one run out of it as Landry Winstead found home, and Pimienta and Carden struck out the final two batters.

Lakeway Christian 17, Knox Catholic 12

Bryson Allen accounted for seven RBIs as the Lions rallied past Knox Catholic with 12 runs in the final two innings on Thursday. Allen homered twice in the win, one of which was a grand slam, and the other was a three-run blast. Lakeway scored three runs in the top of the first thanks to a Cainan Crowe two-RBI single. The Irish responded with three in the bottom of the frame and later took a 5-3 lead. Lakeway tied it in the top of the fourth, but Knox Catholic added two more in the bottom of the frame with a two-run blast. However, the Lions took a 9-7 lead in the top of the fifth with three RBI singles, and a Chase Gockenbach walk loaded the bases to set up Allen’s grand slam and a 13-7 lead for the Lions. Lakeway tacked on four more runs in the sixth, including Allen’s three-run shot to close out its scoring.

Northview 7, Cocke County 6

Cocke County jumped out to a 5-2 lead but the Cougars scored five in the sixth to steal a win over the Fighting Cocks. After falling behind 2-1, Evan Provencal singled to tie it and Cocke County put in three more runs thanks to errors in the bottom of the fourth. However, the Cougars hit a two-RBI double and single in the sixth to take a 7-5 lead. The Fighting Cocks scored another on an error in the bottom of the frame, but couldn’t find the tying run.

Cherokee 10, Sullivan East 7

ROGERSVILLE – Sawyer Housewright opened a scoring barrage for Cherokee with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and the Chiefs kept on scoring as they downed Sullivan East 10-5 on Thursday. Jayden Weston had a double and a pair of runs batted in for Cherokee. Cade Putnal threw five innings for the Chiefs and struck out nine East batters. Cherokee was aided by five Patriots errors in the game.

Claiborne 10, Cosby 7

NEW TAZEWELL – After seeing Cosby take a 6-1 lead through three innings, the Claiborne Bulldogs responded with nine runs of their own in the fourth as they downed the Eagles 10-7. Brayden Grim’s two-run triple in the fourth was the biggest hit for the Bulldogs and he finished the contest with three RBIs. Sam Wilson had five strikeouts in 4.1 innings to notch the win for the Dawgs.

Union County 10, Grainger 7

MAYNARDVILLE – Grainger let a 6-1 lead at Union County slip away as the Patriots rallied to win 10-7. Nine of the runs for the home team came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Garrett Keiter went 3-for-3 with a home run and Ty Collins added a double for the Grizzlies.

Washburn 2, West Greene 0

MOSHEIM – Matthew Harville fanned seven West Greene batters and allowed only two walks as the Washburn Pirates beat West Greene 2-0. The Pirates won despite collecting only three hits, those coming from Bryson Clay, David Bailey and Ayden Davis.

Softball

Morristown West 9, Sevier County 3

Kaylynn Milton went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs to help West down Sevier County on Thursday. Eva Boudier had two hits and two RBI in the leadoff spot, while Adyson Collins, Mackenzie Lucky and Blayne Parker also had multi-hit outings. The Lady Trojans scored all nine runs in the first five innings, including one in each and four in the fifth. Kara Dyke earned the win, pitching all seven innings with five K’s.

Upper St. Clair 11, Jefferson County 1

Upper St. Clair scored in all but the first and seven in the fifth and sixth to take a big win over Jefferson County on Thursday. The Lady Patriots got their lone run in the top of the fith with a Kenzi Trent single that led to a score on an error to make it just 4-1. However, Upper St. Clair caught fire after that and rallied to a 10-run win.

North Greene 15, Morristown East 4

After tying it at four in the top of the fifth inning, North Greene scored 11 runs in the bottom of the frame to take a run-rule win over East on Thursday. Ally Daniels delivered the tying runs with her two-run blast, but a leadoff bomb in response kicked off the North Greene rout and run rule.
