Morristown East picked up a convincing 7-0 win over Morristown West on Tuesday afternoon at Frank Larino Park.
Beginning with the doubles point, East grabbed all three courts. Iria Escribino and Emory Galbreath downed West’s Sophie Morrison and Lexi Moore on court one, 8-1. Maija Rushlow and Kalely Gaby grabbed court two, 8-2, over Sally Beth Shoun and Graelyn Mitchell, while Alexis Tompkins and Ana Domingo took court three with an 8-1 win over Brooklyn Shelton and Reece Nixdorf.
Escrabino dropped just one point in her two matches, sweeping Morristown 8-0 on court one.
have been focusing on consistency this season. Yesterday during our match with West, they did a great job applying that.
“We have been focusing on consistency this season,” East head coach Mindi Stokely said. “During our match with West, they did a great job applying that. Our doubles teams set the tone of the match by winning the doubles point. Iria has been a great addition to our team, both with her abilities and her great attitude. I was very proud of how all of the Lady ‘Canes played yesterday.”
Despite the loss, Lady Trojans’ head coach Parker Ashford saw his young girls’ squad get some meaningful reps on the young season.
“We have a young girls team full of new players,” he said. “Tennis can be frustrating to learn, but our girls are excited to be out here and play. They come from a variety of sports so that athleticism helps development. There are lots of areas of improvement for them, but really, match play is the best teacher.”
Shoun, a freshman, dropped court three in singles to Rushlow, 8-6, but Ashford was proud of the way she battled and made it a close match.
“Sally Beth played incredible today,” Ashford said. “She is a freshman playing only her third match. Maija Rushlow is a fantastic player, so for Sally to compete the way she did shows her potential.”
To round out the singles side, Galbreath took court two 8-2 over Moore, Gaby took court four 8-3 over Mitchell, Tompkins won court five 8-2 over Shelton and Domingo grabbed court six 8-1 over Nixdorf.
The Lady ‘Canes are set to host Jefferson County on Thursday, and the Lady Trojans host Cocke County next Tuesday. Both matches will be at Frank Larino Park.
