Being Green: Walters State host annual Shamrock Shuffle 5K

Green things and stretching runners were the sights on the Walters State Community College campus in Morristown Saturday morning as participants got ready to run the annual Shamrock Shuffle 5k race.
The money raised by the race benefits the WSCC Foundation which helps “award student scholarships and helps support the college” according to Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs Jonathan
“I think this is the seventh year that I’ve done the 5K, and today was far beyond the best weather that we’ve ever had for the race,” Nash said. “We’ve had races in the snow, we’ve had races in rain, we’ve had the wind so strong that it tore down the finishing arch.”
Racers lined up and took off down the campus’s perimeter road at the sound of a starting pistol.
There was also a “one-miler” option for some racers.
Funds from the college’s foundation support a wide variety of needs including scholarships, endowed funds, emergency funds for students and employees and future capital projects.
After balmy, beautiful weather, it’s hard not to look forward to next year.
“This is definitely one that we look forward to year in and year out, and we’re really excited to continue to host it for the community,” Nash said.
Nash said that if runners would like to support the college there was still time to sign up for their next race at the Walters State Sevier County campus and participate in the Sevier County One Mile Fun Run scheduled for March 21.
“They can go on our website at ws.edu/run and sign up for that Sevier County one-mile fun run.”
