Mount Olive to host ‘Black in Appalachia 101’ Sunday

Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, of Morristown, will host “Black in Appalachia 101: a Celebration of Black History Month” with William Isom of Whitesburg Sunday, February 22 at 11 a.m.
Isom, a Hamblen County native, is the founder and director of “Black in Appalachia” based in Whitesburg. Isom produces documentary films, oral histories, research and data to raise the visibility of Black communities in the Appalachian region.
Found in 2012, “Black in Appalachia” works day to day in Eastern Kentucky, Southwest Virginia, Southern West Virginia, Western North Carolina and East Tennessee. Isom will be discussing the story and highlights of “Black in Appalachia,” how it started, developed and the work it does. He will also talk about the historic significance of the Pineville community and propose a call to action to preserve Black history.
He is the father of two men, Devin and Isa; and papaw to Violet Blair. Everyone welcome. Pastor is Elder Ventrus Norfolk. The church is located at 316 Pope Road at the entrance to Frank Lorino Park in Morristown.
