Smoky Bears down Trojans, 46-40, in slugfest

MORRISTOWN – Offense was hard to come by in Thursday’s game between Morristown West and Sevier County.
Both the Trojans and the Smoky Bears managed only four points each in the first period and then West went cold in the fourth period, netting only one basket until the final minute of the contest.
That allowed Sevier County to claim a 46-40 win over their old IMAC conference foes.
“That was their third game of the week and it was our third game of the week and that is going to happen from time to time,” Trojans head coach Joe Dobyns said of the offensive woes that both teams had.
“We knew we had a focus towards Friday with a big conference game and Sevier County has a game on Friday as well so the focus tonight might have been a little down. That’s no excuse as we still have to find ways to win games like that and I need to find ways to put us in better situations down the stretch to find a way to win.
“We missed a lot of shots early and that might have been fatigue. I could give a laundry list of excuses but that doesn’t make any difference, we have to find ways to win a game like that.”
After the score was 4-4 at the end of the first period, West was able to build a 16-12 lead at the half.
That lead went to nine points on a basket by Julian Sexton but Sevier County was able to put together a couple of successful three-pointers and then went inside to Jackson Perry who muscled his way to a pair of baskets.
The Trojans were still very much in the thick of things going to the fourth period as they trailed 33-32 but then the offense went into the freezer as Jamere Williams’ basket was the only one West had for seven minutes and the Smoky Bears took full advantage.
Tucker McClain hit a pair of threes in the final 32 seconds but the damage had been done and Sevier County came out on top 46-40. Williams led West with 10 points, and Owen Brooks scored 10 for the Bears.
