RUTLEDGE – Grainger dropped a game to Cocke County on Friday but bounced back with a win over Cosby on Saturday.

In Friday’s contest, the Lady Red used a balanced scoring attack as four different Cocke County players scored in a 59-47 win. The 4th-ranked Lady Red were led in scoring by Karmine Carmichael who finished with 14 points. Blakelyn Clevenger netted 12 points for Cocke County and scoring 10 points each were Ava Wheeler and Chloe Neithammer. Brookelyn Roach and Adison Hayes each scored 11 points for Grainger. The game was settled in the fourth period as the Lady Grizz only scored three points, all on free throws. Grainger bounced back less than 24 hours later as they got past Cosby, 55-38. Hayes had 14 points to lead the Lady Grizzlies, and Cora Dalton and Abrie Nickels each scored 10 for the Lady Grizzlies.

(Girls) Washburn downs Union County

MAYNARDVILLE – After trailing for the first three quarters, the Washburn Lady Pirates were able to pull away in the final frame for a 52-45 win at Union County on Friday. Hannah Williams turned in a 16-point performance and was followed closely by Ebany Hill who had 15 points. Taylie Proffitt had 10 points for Washburn. The Lady Pirates take on Pineville (Ky.) on Tuesday in the final regular-season game before the conference tournament starts at Washburn later this week.

(Boys) Grainger falls to Cocke County and Cosby

RUTLEDGE – For the second week in a row, the Grainger Grizzlies had to play four games in a week and after taking care of Volunteer and Union County earlier in the week, faced the two teams that call Cocke County home over the weekend.

The Grizzlies traveled to Newport on Friday to tangle with Cocke County and saw their five-game win streak come to an end with a 67-60 setback. The Fighting Cocks used a 22-7 scoring advantage to their liking in the fourth period. Maddox Holt scored 14 points for the home team, Waylon Fox had 13, Eli Roberts added 12 and Will Sutton finished with 11. Kade Williams tallied 14 points to lead Grainger and three players- Coy Morgan, Carver Turley and Jackson Trent- all scored 11 points for the Grizzlies. Saturday’s contest at The Den saw Cosby avenge an earlier loss to the Grizzlies with a 52-50 triumph. Cooper Davis led the Eagles with 20 points, followed by 16 from Cruz Coggins. The Williams twins led Grainger as Kade had 17 points and Carter added 11.  

 (Boys) Washburn downs Union County

MAYNARDVILLE – Washburn suffered consecutive losses for the first time this season earlier in the week and entered Friday’s game trying to avoid a third straight setback which they did as they downed Union County 64-58 in overtime. Landry Coffey saved his best until last as he finished the game with 25 points, six of which came in the crucial overtime period. Matthew Harville had 10 points for the Pirates. On Tuesday, Pineville (Ky.) wraps up the regular season slate of games for Washburn and then the Pirates will prepare to host the district tournament.
