Finding Healing Through Movement and Fellowship: How Beautifully Whole Wellness Is Redefining Yoga on Main Street in Morristown
In the heart of downtown Morristown, just off the rhythm of passing cars and the footfalls of Main Street visitors, a new kind of gathering is unfolding.
Inside Beautifully Whole Wellness, yoga mats are unrolled, breaths deepen, and a diverse community moves together — not just through poses, but through healing, shared stories, and connection.
Founded by two women whose lives were transformed by the very practice they now offer, the studio is becoming more than a place to stretch — it’s becoming a space where body, mind, and spirit converge.
Beautifully Whole Wellness was started by Shellie Rabago and Michelle Mahre, both cancer survivors whose journeys ultimately led them to share yoga’s restorative potential with others here in Morristown. Shellie, a native of Sussex, England, moved to this area with her heart set on building community and nurturing wellness.
Michelle, originally from Minnesota and now a certified yoga instructor with Yoga Alliance, brings a decade of experience in fitness and mindful movement. Together, they are offering something rare on this stretch of East Tennessee: a place where healing is practiced on the mat and lived off it.
“Yoga healed us in ways we didn’t expect — physically, emotionally, spiritually,” Michelle says. “And we knew it could do the same for others.”
From Survivor to Guide
Shellie’s first brush with serious illness came in 2003, when she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
She now also lives with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease, and yoga has become her lifeline.
The practice has helped calm inflammation, steady her energy, and help her feel at home in her body again. Years later, Michelle faced her own battle with breast cancer from 2019 into 2020.
In the aftermath of treatment, both women found solace and strength in yoga — a practice that helped them reconnect with their bodies, slow down their minds, and find peace amid uncertainty. Today, they channel those experiences into every class and community event they offer.
Medical research supports the healing potential they’ve witnessed firsthand. Studies suggest that yoga and meditation can help reduce stress, improve quality of life, and alleviate some symptoms experienced by cancer survivors, including anxiety, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. But Beautifully Whole Wellness isn’t just a yoga studio — it’s a place that invites people of all backgrounds and abilities to belong.
A Space for Every Body
Located at 109 E. Main Street, the studio’s bright and welcoming space reflects its mission: to be a heart-centered place for yoga, community connection, and holistic support.
Here, you won’t find intimidating hard-core fitness classes or exclusive wellness jargon. Instead, you’re welcomed with warmth, inclusivity, and a wide range of offerings designed to meet people where they are.
Classes include:
● Chair Yoga — gentle movements supported by a chair, ideal for beginners, older adults, or anyone seeking a low-impact practice.
● Gentle Yoga — slow-paced sessions focusing on breath and mindful movement.
● Vinyasa — more dynamic flow for those who want to move with breath and intention.
● Somatic Yoga — an internal-awareness practice that encourages deeper mind-body connection.
● Restorative Yoga — Shellie’s favorite, centered on deep relaxation and tension release.
Michelle, as the lead instructor, infuses every class with both physical expertise and emotional insight. Certified through the Yoga Alliance with more than 300 hours of training, she guides students through practices that honor the body’s limits and celebrate its potential. Whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the first time or returning as a seasoned practitioner, Michelle’s approach invites you to move at your own pace and fully inhabit your experience.
Yoga as a Bridge, Not a Barrier
“We want people in Morristown to know that yoga can be a healthy, life-giving practice for those who place their faith in Jesus as well,” she says. “And as someone whose faith in Jesus is central to my life, I can tell you this: meditation is part of Scripture and essential to the Christian life.”
In an effort to make yoga feel more approachable to Christians, Michelle has adapted her language — replacing terms like namaste with more familiar expressions, such as shalom, a Hebrew word meaning peace.
More Than Yoga — A Hub for Community
What truly sets Beautifully Whole Wellness apart are the events and gatherings that extend beyond the mat. The studio hosts a vibrant calendar of experiences designed to nourish different facets of life:
● Sound Baths
● Relaxation Teas
● Speed Friending
● Book Clubs
These events reinforce the studio’s vision of community as much as yoga: a place where people can find support, build friendships, and nourish their souls.
As Shellie puts it, Beautifully Whole Wellness isn’t about perfection — it’s about presence: showing up, breathing, sharing stories, and walking alongside others at every stage of life.
Healing Together
Cancer survivors often speak of healing in terms that go beyond the physical, and yoga at Beautifully Whole Wellness reflects that same holistic spirit. Research shows that practices like yoga can improve the quality of life for cancer survivors by reducing stress, easing fatigue, and supporting emotional wellness — benefits that echo what Shellie and Michelle have lived through and now teach with compassion.
For many participants, the studio’s inclusive approach to movement and meditation has been life-changing. Whether it’s through a gentle chair class or a deep restorative session, people leave with more than stretched muscles — they leave with a sense of calm, clarity, and connection.
A Home on Main Street
Beautifully Whole Wellness has quickly become part of Main Street’s evolving identity — a place where health and human connection stand front and center. The founders’ personal stories are woven into the ethos of the space: Shellie’s journey through cancer, her life in Morristown, and her commitment to creating healing spaces; and Michelle’s passion for bringing yoga — and its many benefits — to a broader audience.
Together, they have built more than a business — they have built a community hub where people can come as they are, breathe deeply, move gently, and find support from kindred spirits.
In a world that often rushes past wellness in favor of productivity, Beautifully Whole Wellness invites the people of Morristown to slow down, connect, and truly live.
