Lakeway Area gets second round of winter weather

A cold weather advisory remains in place for the Lakeway Area through Friday according to the National Weather Service in Morristown.

The forecast warns that wind chills will drop to under 10 degrees Fahrenheit and advises people to dress appropriately.

“These cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken,” a published NWS statement read. “Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed in these temperatures for a period of time.”

Many areas in the region woke up to more snow than expected on Thursday morning and commuters were faced with hazardous roadways in many areas.

“We’ve had a round of snowfall that began around 4:30 this morning and it is sticking everywhere,” Cocke County EMA Director Joseph Esway said in a social media post. “The new snow has settled on wet roadways and is making travel dangerous.”

The cold weather advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. on Friday.

As roads in Hamblen County were cleared on Thursday, officials continued to urge caution and encouraged drivers to stay off roads if possible.

Hamblen County EMA officials also reminded residents to check on their neighbors who might be more isolated and vulnerable in these weather conditions.

“As a reminder, continue to check on loved ones, neighbors, shut-ins, elderly and anyone with medically-compromised conditions,” the agency published in a statement on Thursday.

Temperatures will be around 10 degrees just before sunrise on Friday, but the high should be above freezing Friday afternoon.

The weather will give way to a mostly sunny weekend that will lead to warmer temperatures next week; the highs for next Tuesday and Wednesday are currently forecasted to be around 60 degrees.
