West falls 4-1 to Sevier County in district opener

It was all Bearettes on Thursday night as Sevier County defeated West 4-1 in a District 2-AAA matchup.

While Sevier County dominated possession for a majority of the first half, the ball stayed between the boxes for the first 31 minutes.

Freshman Gianna Grizzanti was the first on the board, breaking the game open with her right wing strike from outside the box.

She continued to score a penalty kick and pick up an assist as well. Carlie Turner also scored for the Bearettes.

West came out more aggressive in the second half, with physical play in the midfield spearheaded by Isamenia Munoz.

Munoz put the Lady Trojans on the board in the 61’ from a free kick she put in the side of the net.

“Izzy (Munoz) is a super talented player,” West head coach Emily Bryant said. “She’s a senior, she’s always been an offensive threat for us. She definitely picks up the intensity and the vibe and it translates to the whole team. Definitely happy to have her as part of the team.”

For West, the challenge this season to date has been piecing together a full 80 minutes and converting on their chances at goal.

Outside of the 12 minute stretch from the 31’-43’, the Lady Trojans were level with the Bearettes at 1-1. Similar to their matchup with Pigeon Forge last week, when it rained, it poured, but there were still positive takeaways.

“I think we pieced together some good things,” Bryant said. “I know the final result doesn’t show it but we still had some opportunities and chances that we didn’t capitalize on. But I’m really proud of the effort we put forth today.”

Looking forward, the Lady Trojans play Chuckey-Doak next Tuesday and hop back into district play against Jefferson County.

West faces a tough test, as Jefferson County sits at 2-0 in the district, and a win against the Lady Trojans would secure their third consecutive regular season district title.

“Just one game at a time. Going into district play, that’s when it counts so I think just trying to improve on the things we needed to work on tonight, trying to make more offensive opportunities and continue packing it in on the defense,” Bryant said.
