Jean (Hipsher) Smith
Jean (Hipsher) Smith passed away Sunday, August 27, 2023, at The Legacy at English Station in Louisville, KY.
Jean was born as the only child of Glenn and Nannie Wolfe and grew up on the family farm in Mooresburg, TN. She had many beautiful and loving memories of early years spent with family and friends on the farm.
She attended Tusculum College before marrying Jim Hipsher (Morristown) and moving to Chattanooga, TN.
In Chattanooga, Jean was an active member of White Oak United Methodist Church, became the mother of two children and developed lifelong friendships.
Jean’s family returned to Morristown, TN in 1974 where she resided for several years following the death of her husband, Jim.
She worked at Walters State Community College and First United Methodist Church before returning to Chattanooga, TN.
Jean married Rev. Bob Smith in 1983. She enjoyed life as a Methodist minister’s wife and was blessed to become a part of his two beautiful daughters’ lives.
Jean was a kind and giving person who was always available to those in need.
She became an avid storyteller later in life and told wonderfully fun tales about her unusual pets (a pig and an alligator) and her adventures growing up on the farm with her cousins, friends, and family.
She had a special bond with her Grandaddy Wolfe whom she lovingly remembered would read her the ‘funnies’ from the Sunday paper while they relaxed on the front porch swing.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Nannie Wolfe; cousins, Herbert Mayes, Kathleen Harris and Margaret Bivens; husband, Jim Hipsher; husband, Rev. Bob Smith.
She is survived by her son, Bob Hipsher of Acworth, GA; daughter, Cathy Hipsher of Louisville, KY; stepdaughters Cheri (Bob) Blincoe of Florida and Rebecca (David) DeBusk of Virginia; Grandchildren Bryne (Jenny) Jacobs of Lexington, KY; Jennifer (Eric) Hall and Kristen (Kyle) Mazanowski both of Louisville, KY; Susan (Chris) Whyte of Virginia; Elizabeth (Anthony) Maslanka of Virginia; 8 great grandchildren – Wes, Max, Kyla, Jake, Ethan, Holden, Rose, and Flora Jane.
A special thanks to the wonderful friends and staff of The Legacy at English Station who provided loving care and support during the last year.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Jarnigan Cemetery in Morristown, TN at 10:30 on Friday, September 1, 2023. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Jean’s honor to Hosparus Health of Louisville.
