Get ready for school pictures
Welcome back Trojan Nation to the fourth Trojan Talk of the school year! We are more than half way through August already!
Thank you to all students and community members for supporting West High’s football team in the Citizen Tribune Kickoff classic and blood drive.
Pictures for students and staff will be this week in addition to freshmen student council class officer voting. Students also enjoyed wearing spirit wear this past week, and students put on their best costumes to show their Trojan pride!
Attention Freshmen: Student Council Elections will be held on Friday, August 25th.
Senior portraits will be taken tomorrow August 21. Underclass yearbook pictures will be taken Tuesday, August 22.
The first FFA meeting of the school year will be on August 22 in Mr. Tripucka’s classroom right after school.
Everyone is invited. Any FFA member from last year that is interested in an office position for this school year needs to see Mr. Tripucka as soon as possible to fill out an application.

The Cultural Appreciation & Awareness Club is having its first meeting today, August 16th, in Mr. Parker’s room 472. Don’t miss this opportunity to see what the Culture Club is all about!
Scholar’s Bowl will have its first practice on Monday, August 21 after school in room 474. Ms. Gibson and Dr. Collins will be sponsoring a scholar’s bowl this year.
Students at West High are encouraged to try and advance their academic education with the use of scholarships they can earn. There are plenty of scholarships students can apply for and some of these include:
The Gates Millennium Scholarship- The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for minority, high school seniors from low-income households.
To apply, students must be: A high school senior, from at least one of the following ethnicities: African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American, Pell-eligible, a US citizen, national, or permanent resident, and in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3. The deadline for applications is Sept. 15.
National BETA Scholarship- Senior Beta Club members who are registered with national headquarters by November 1st who also present leadership potential, academic excellence, and commitment to community service.
The deadline for applications is November 1, 2023 and then January 18, 2024.
Horatio Alger Association Scholarship- provide financial assistance to students throughout the nation who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Scholarship criteria also include high school graduation, demonstrate financial need, commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree, and United States citizenship.
The deadline for applications is to be declared. (opening December 1, 2023)

In student council news, football homecoming week is September 5-8. Dress-up day themes and special events will be announced soon!
Now onto sports! Aug. 21, West has a golf match at 4:00 at Patriot Hills. Aug. 22, West plays volleyball at 5:00 p.m. at East. Also on Aug. 22, is a soccer game at 6:30 at West Ridge High School. Aug. 24, West has a Golf match at 4:00 p.m. at Link Hills and a Volleyball game at 5:00 at South Greene High School along with a home soccer game at 6:00 at East High School.
