CHURCH HILL—Senior Veda Barton led the way as Volunteer dealt Morristown East its first volleyball setback by capturing a 3-1 victory over the Lady Hurricanes.

Barton hammered 19 kills, blocked three shots and served a couple of aces as the Lady Falcons evened their record at 1-1 after a five-set loss to Daniel Boone in their opener.

Volunteer pulled away late to win the opening set, 25-19, before East tied the match with a 25-21 win in set two. East scored the first two points in the third game but the Lady Falcons reeled off eight straight and went on to a 25-9 rout.

The home team closed it out with a 25-21 triumph after a close battle in the final set.

Adah Snodgrass added 10 kills, two aces and a block while Jaycee Cassidy, the only other senior for Volunteer, put down six kills.

East was led by Reagan Forester’s 10 kills while Riley Forester added eight and Hailey Hall six.

Lady Hurricanes coach Courtney Dotson said, “I thought we could have competed a little better than we did tonight.

“I thought we looked a little tired and I guess that’s normal after already playing three matches this week,” she added.

Dotson continued, “But I thought we missed a lot of serves and had a lot of missed communication and that really hurt us.

“Volunteer has some players who can hit the ball and I thought they played well,” Dotson closed.

The first set was really close with 10 ties and five lead changes.

East opened an 11-8 lead and was on top 13-11 when the Lady Falcons scored three straight. It was tied at 16-16 when Cassidy and Burton both had kills in a three-point Volunteer run to take the lead for good.

The Lady ‘Canes were still in it at 22-19 but the home team scored the final three points.

East never trailed in the second set. Riley Forester had two kills to open the game. The Lady ‘Canes were up by just one when a four-point run capped by Hannah Hall’s ace made it 13-8.

But Volunteer came back to tie it at 16-16 and then again at 19-19. That’s when Hailey and Hannah Hall both had kills and Hannah served an ace to lead a four-point run.

The Lady Falcons scored two straight before serving out of bounds. Riley Forester then knocked down the game-winner.

After East took the lead in the third set, Burton and Snodgrass had two kills each to spark the 8-0 run by the Lady Falcons.

The Lady ‘Canes rallied briefly to get it down to 9-5 but the home team scored six stright and rolled to the win.

It was a battle in the final set. East took the lead at 3-2 on a kill by Reagan Forester. She had another kill to give the Lady ‘Canes their final lead at 14-13 before Kayla Capson had a kill and Lexi Hilton served an ace to tie it.

After tied at 15, 16 and 17 Burton nailed a kill from the back row and Cassidy followed with another kill as Volunteer went up by three. But Reagan Forester had back-to-back kills to get East within one at 22-21.

Snodgrass then smacked a kill before Burton scored off a block and then put down a kill to end the match.
