Morristown East racked up its third victory of the young volleyball season by sailing past Cherokee in straight sets Tuesday night at Isenburg-Siler Gym.

The Lady Hurricanes took the opening set by 25-17 before taking a 25-14 win in game two. East closed it out with a 25-13 victory.

Reagan Forester led the East attack with 10 kills while Hannah Hall had seven and Riley Forester five. Harmony Sullivan had three kills and served three aces to go along with a blocked shot.

Mackenzie Jarnagin had three blocked shots and Hailey Hall chipped in three kills and a pair of aces.

Cherokee, now 1-1 for the season, was led by Abby Shanks and Kylie Carpenter with two kills each.

East coach Courtney Dotson said, “I was pretty pleased with the way we played. We had quite a few fans here and the girls pushed through.

“I’m proud of the way they’re coming together as a team,” she added. “In the future when we play in some faster paced games and stuff like that, that will be really important.”

Dotson went on to say, “We need to cut down on our hitting errors and we missed quite a few serves tonight so we have a lot of things to work on in practice.

“We hit the ball well at times but we still had a lot of errors.”

East jumped out to a quick start in all three sets and never trailed in the match.

A serve into the net opened the night giving the Lady ‘Canes the lead and Sullivan had a pair of aces as East built a 6-0 lead.

It was 9-2 when the Lady Chiefs scored five straight points to get back in the set. A block by Kristen Gillett provided one of the points in the spurt and East errors accounted for the other four.

However, East reeled off five points in a row with Emma Swint serving. Sullivan had a block and Hannah and Hailey Hall both had kills as East’s lead grew to 14-7.

Cherokee scored when a kill sailed long but East scored three more on kills by Hailey Hall, Reagan Forester and Sullivan.

After the lead went to 20-10, the Lady Chiefs scored four in a row and battled back within 23-17 before Hannah Hall had a kill and a hitting error ended the set.

Sullivan had an ace and Jarnagin blocked a shot as the Lady ‘Canes scored the first four points of the second set. After Cherokee got on the scoreboard, Jarnagin scored on a kill and a blocked shot before kills by both Foresters, another kill by Sullivan and an ace by Tori Johnson upped the lead to 12-4.

The Lady Chiefs got as close as 14-8 but the home team had a five-point run to lead by 11. Cherokee got it down to 20-12 but East closed the set with a 5-2 spurt to win going away.

It was more of the same in the final set as the Lady Hurricanes grabbed a 6-0 lead as four different players knocked down kills.

The Lady Chiefs trailed by only 11-8 when East ran off a 10-2 spurt to take control. Reagan Forester had three kills in the run.

Cherokee scored two straight before the Lady ‘Canes finished off the match with a 4-1 run.

East is back in action on Thursday night when the Lady Hurricanes travel to Volunteer.
