Carson-Newman’s Sigma Delta Pi chapter earns high marks from national honor society
Carson-Newman University’s Gamma Chi Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, was named an “Honor Chapter” for its outstanding activities in 2022-23, an award that was bestowed to only 12 chapters nationwide in 2023.
This is the first time in the chapter’s 69-year history that it has earned the distinction. The society credits Drs. Mary Baldridge and Leonor Taiano Campoverde, C-N’s chapter faculty advisers, for their instrumental role in earning the award for their student group.
In addition, Carson-Newman’s chapter was named co-recipient of the prestigious Phoenix Award, a national honor granted for a year of extraordinary and exemplary chapter activity as compared to previous years.
Each summer, the National Executive Committee chooses approximately 10-15 “Honor Chapters” annually from the 634 chapters nationwide. The recognition is based upon the caliber of chapter projects reflecting Sigma Delta Pi’s mission of honoring excellence in the study of the Spanish language, contributing to cultural understanding, and upholding the goals of the society.
CNU earns multiple honors at national convention
Carson-Newman University earned multiple awards at this year’s Gamma Sigma Sigma service sorority’s national convention. Carson-Newman students Caly Baker and Katlyn Jordan represented C-N’s Gamma Pi chapter, which earned Outstanding Chapter in its District, Mountain Mover Award and Most Spirited. Carson-Newman also won the March of Babies service competition.
Individually, Jordan earned the Serve 100 award, Outstanding Collegiate, Doreece Hines Emerging Leader Award, and Lynne Mowers Outstanding Leadership Award. District 5 Director and 2018 C-N alumna Amanda McCann noted this year’s showing was the most awards earned by C-N’s chapter in its 54-year history.
