Hamblen County student charged with threatening a school

As Hamblen County Schools complete its second full day of the new year, a students was charged with threatening a school.
On Tuesday, August 2, 2023, an SRO was told that a student had made threats to acquaintances stating that on the first full-day of school, the student planned to shoot up the school, according to the investigator on the case, Lt. Det. James Brooks with the Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office
“We immediately went into action and interviewed the student,” Brooks said. “The student acknowledged the threat had been made, but that it was a joke.”
The juvenile is charged with the offense of Threatening Mass Violence at a school.
“The Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office and the Hamblen County Board of Education are adamant that all threats will be taken seriously,” Hamblen County Sheriff Chad Mullins stressed. “Parents need to let their students know threats are not jokes and anyone making any type of threat towards a school or another individual will be charged accordingly. We stand firm on this.”
