Cabbage scores winning run, collects three hits on Sunday Night Baseball in series against Astros

Making his Major League Baseball debut over the weekend against the defending World Series Champions, Trey Cabbage proved he was right where he belongs.

Taking on the Houston Astros in his first three games in the Majors, the Grainger native saw action in each contest. After a groundout in his first at-bat on Friday, Cabbage came close to walking things off on Saturday with a flyout to the warning track in the bottom of the ninth of a tie game. Making the final out of the ninth, Cabbage was the Angels’ ghost runner on second in the bottom of the 10th and scored the winning run on an error by the Houston shortstop.

“It’s amazing,” Cabbage said on TV after Saturday’s game. “Guys fought hard all night. We went blow for blow with them and came out on top. It’s just such a blessing to be here and making memories.”

The weekend ended with a bang for Cabbage on Sunday, making his first career start in the Sunday Night Baseball Game on ESPN. In his first at-bat of the game, Cabbage singled to left for his first Major League hit. Then, with the game tied at one in the fourth, Cabbage collected his first two RBIs with a double down the left field line to give the Angels a 3-1 lead. Cabbage’s final at-bat of the game came in the bottom of the seventh, finishing the night off with another single before being pinch-run for.

For Cabbage, the weekend was memorable and one he wants to build off of as he looks to try and make this a permanent stay with LA.

“Every bit of it is a grind,” Cabbage told local media over the weekend. “Everybody who’s been through it, they all know how tough it is and how hard we work. Obviously, everybody has their struggles. The big one for me, injuries. I got hurt when I first got drafted. Didn’t play hardly at all last year. It’s just been a blessing to come out here and to be able to play as many games as I have so far and then still be healthy and hopefully play the rest of the season, wherever that may be.”

With the injuries mounting for the Angels as they look to stay in the wild card hunt, calling up Cabbage from Triple-AAA Salt Lake City was a no brainer. In 81 games this season, Cabbage was hitting .287 with 23 home runs, 64 RBIs and 24 stolen bases. Cabbage was just one of three players in all levels of professional baseball to have 20 homers and 20 stolen bases at the All-Star break.

Cabbage has split time this season in the minors playing first base and DHing. However, with the Angels DH a permanent spot for Shohei Ohtani, Cabbage will spend the majority of his time playing first.

The Angles remain at home this week, beginning a series with the Yankees on Monday before welcoming the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. The Angels then hit the road for a series in Detroit before traveling to Toronto for a series with the Blue Jays.

If all goes well for Cabbage, he will travel close to home following the Blue Jays series as the Angels are scheduled to play three games in Atlanta against the Braves from Monday, July 31-August 2.
