Talbott man charged with murdering his wife

On Saturday July 8, 2023 at about 7 p.m. Hamblen County Sheriff Deputies responded to a shooting call on Marie St. in Talbott.

The caller identified himself to 911 dispatch as Charles Barbley and said that he had shot his wife.

Upon arrival, deputies observed Barbley, 76, put the handgun on the front porch of his residence, and he was taken into custody without incident.

Deputies found an unresponsive female inside the residence.

The victim, identified as Mickey Barbley, 66. was pronounced dead at the scene.

Walters State Community College – where Mickey Barbley had been an adjunct faculty member – released a statement honoring her contribution to the college.

“The college is extremely saddened by the loss of Mickey Barbely. She taught communication classes as an adjunct faculty member for Walters State for 10 years and was named the college’s Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Member in 2019,” she said. “She was beloved by her students and known for always going the extra mile to help them succeed. She will be greatly missed by her colleagues and her students.”

 

Charles Barbley was arrested and transported to the Hamblen County Jail where he was charged with First Degree Murder by the Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office.

Barbley went for a bond hearing Monday and was denied.
