Shafer Insurance Agency was started by Alex Shafer, Sr. in 1963.

In 1969, Alex Shafer, Sr. passed away, and his son, Bo, began running the agency. The agency was briefly sold to Expeditor Systems in 1969, and Bo bought it back in 1971.

In 1974, the agency incorporated and tripled in size with nine employees.

In 1978, bond operations began, which increased the revenue and staff by 20 percent. Andy Shafer joined the agency in 1995, making him a third-generation Shafer to join the family business.

In 2002, they began selling employee benefits, which further increased both staff and revenue.

Shafer Insurance Agency made its first agency acquisition in 2003. In 2005, bond operations tripled in size, and safety services were added in 2007.

Shafer Insurance Agency acquired another agency in Kingsport in 2008 to expand its footprint in East Tennessee.

Over the course of a few years that followed, the agency’s offerings expanded to include a dedicated construction practice, HR solutions, and a select department. Shafer Insurance Agency continues to expand and currently has two locations in East Tennessee, with a new office in Morristown opening soon.

About the expansion into Morristown, Andy said “it only makes sense, since we have offices just down the road in Knoxville and Johnson City, to bridge that area in order to better serve our clients and customers.
