Senators in top-10 after first round of NJCAA DII Golf Championship

PLYMOUTH, IN – Walters State is in a tie for eighth place following the opening round of the NJCAA DII Golf Championship on Tuesday at Swan Lake Resort.

As a team, the Senators shot a 293 (5-over). Cleveland State is tied with Walters State, while South Mountain CC is in first place after shooting a 7-under.

Sawyer Spoone led the way for Walters State in round one with a 2-under, 70. Spoone, who is in a tie for 11th place in the tournament, had a birdie on hole 3 and then shot a 2-under on the back nine with birdies on the 11th, 14th and 15th holes.

Along with Spoone, AJ Rinehart is in a tie for 23rd after shooting even-par. Rinehart birdied the third hole and then finished his round strong with birdies on 15, 17 and 18.

Rounding out the team for Walters State were JT McKenzie (T-49), Chad Homan (T-57) and Jeremy Ellis (T-68). McKenzie shot a three-over on the day, with birdies on six, seven and 16 and an eagle on the 509-yard par-5 fifth. Homan is currently at four-over after birdies on one, five and 15, while Ellis is at five-over. He birdied the 10th hole.

Heartland’s Mason Minkel is in first place after shooting a 9-under on Tuesday.
