A Greeneville grocery store was among several in the region to receive a bomb threat over the last few weeks.

The Greeneville Food City was evacuated Sunday afternoon after a bomb threat was called into the store.

According to a release from the Greeneville Police Department, around 12:30 p.m., Sunday, police was notified by Greeneville- Greene County Central Dispatch that Food City, located at 905 Snapps Ferry Road, had received a bomb threat by phone. When officers arrived at the scene, they spoke to the store manager who said that a man called the store and alleged he had placed an explosive device inside the store earlier in the day.

The store had been evacuated by management when officers arrived.

GPD officers walked through the store with assistant manager Clifford Allen. When nothing was located, GPD requested the assistance of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and explosives detection K-9 to respond to the scene. The K-9 and its handler Wayne Wilhoit responded and conducted a search of the building.

Neither investigation revealed any suspicious packages. The store management then reopened the grocery.

According to Food City management, the company has received similar incidents like this one at other locations in surrounding areas in the last few weeks.
