As the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra took the stage at Cherokee Park, a hush of anticipation fell over the green. The conductor held his baton aloft, then suddenly with a flick of his wrist he transformed the silence into a sea of melodies.

The concert Thursday night, was free to the public and was sponsored by KaTom Restaurant Supply and Colortech. It took place at the Citizen Tribune/Jefferson Federal Amphitheater.

Despite the potential for rain people came armed with an arsenal of umbrellas, determined to enjoy the beautiful music in spite of the clouds.

During the hour-long performance, the orchestra performed a total of 10 pieces including works by Gioachino Rossini, Victor Herbert and William Grant Still. They then ended the performance on an upbeat note with the familiar tune of Stars and Stripes by John Philip Sousa.

“It’s extremely important that we share our music with various communities,” said Resident Conductor James Fellenbaum.”

He added that providing these opportunities for communities to be exposed to orchestra music is very important to Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

“It’s not only giving the gift of music to the community, but also if they like it then they may wish to delve into music even more themselves.” Fellenbaum said.

Fellenbaum, who has been with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra for nearly 20 years, said being able to share music with communities helps spark interest in the arts and encourages people to pursue another genre of music. They hold outdoor performances in Knoxville, Maryville and Morristown and often travel around to other areas for special events.

“It’s mutually beneficial to bring our music to communities and for people to be able to hear what we’re about. If they like what they hear they may come see us and enjoy it even more,” Fellenbaum said.

The outdoor concert was performed by the chamber orchestra, which is a smaller version of the full orchestra. The beautiful sound can be enjoyed at full capacity in Knoxville. To purchase tickets or view their calendar of events you can visit their website or Facebook page.
