Morristown West entered Monday’s District 2-4A Tournament opener against Sevier County looking to gain some momentum after falling in their final two games of the regular season.
They only needed an inning to do just that.
In the first, every batter for the Lady Trojans reached base at least once as West scored seven runs with two outs on their way to a 12-1 win over the Bearettes in six innings.
With the win, West will take on Morristown East on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. with the winner punching their ticket to the Region 1-4A Tournament.
“Our bats were going again and felt like we were a little more in sync,” West coach Heather Kelley said. “It was a pretty clean night. I thought Aviah pitched well. She did her job. It was good to see freshman Alexus Mullane drive in five runs. Kaylee Dyke also did well getting us started with her two-run homer. And Mikaela (Olodey) and Briony (Bunsic) had a couple big hits, as well.
“We’re ready for tomorrow’s game and we’ll see what happens.”
At the plate, Alexus Mullane led the way for West with five RBIs while Kaylee Dyke smacked a two-run homer in the first inning. Mikaela Olodey and Briony Bunsic had two hits, as well. RBIs came from Mullane with five, Briony Bunsic with three, Dyke with two, Aubrie Messer with one and Hailey Milton with one.
In the circle, Aviah Bunsic got the start and threw all six innings. Aviah struck out 12 while allowing just one run on a solo homer. That was the only hit she allowed in the game.
After a 1-2-3 inning from Aviah Bunsic to start, West wasted no time taking the lead with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning all coming with two outs. Dyke got the scoring going with a two-run homer before Olodey doubled and Messer drove her in with an RBI single.
Following two more singles to load the bases, Mullane cleared them with a three-RBI triple to make it 6-0. The final run of the inning came as Briony Bunsic doubled in Mullane.
Sevier County got on the board in the second with a run, but West got the run back in the bottom of the fifth as Mullane grounded out to score Milton.
Then in the sixth, the Lady Trojans ended things early as Milton singled home a run, Mullane walked with the bases loaded to score a run and Briony Bunsic doubled home two more to make it 12-1.
