A Surgoinsville man is facing a first-degree murder charge in the shooting death of his uncle Thursday morning.

Cody E. Jackson, 25, told Hawkins County deputies that he had shot his uncle, identified as Billy Ray Jones, 56, of Newport at the residence. Deputies found Jones deceased from a single gunshot wound.

According to a release from Hawkins County Sheriff Ronnie Lawson, at 3:54 a.m., Thursday, the HCSO received a report of a shooting at 2520 Stanley Valley Road in Surgoinsville, Jackson’s home. Upon deputies’ arrival, they spoke with Jackson, who told deputies that he had shot his uncle, identified as Jones, at the residence.

Jones’ body was found in a nearby camper.

Jackson is being held in the Hawkins County Jail without bond and is scheduled for arraignment on Monday, May 8, in Hawkins County General Sessions Court before Judge Todd Ross.
