The Tennessee Bureau of investigations is working with state and federal agencies to trace the source of several hoax 911 calls made Wednesday morning. Tennessee schools affected range from Kingpsport, Johnson City and Bristol in upper East Tennessee to Knoxville, Clarksville and Chattanooga.
The calls alleged an active shooter at various high schools around the state including Jefferson County High School and Morristown-Hamblen West High School. Both schools were placed on lockdown and searched.
The calls were confirmed to be a hoax.
“At this time, none of these reports has proven credible and there is no known immediate threat to public safety at this time,” the TBI said.
Jefferson County Schools officials confirmed that all Jefferson schools were placed on lockdown until the High School was cleared.
“Today at approximately 10:41 a.m. Jefferson County 911 received a call that four students had been shot at the Jefferson County High School,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene and determined that it was a false call. The building was cleared and there was no injuries reported.”
The Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement:
“The rumors of a shooting and/or injuries at a Hamblen County School are totally false.
“A call was received at 911, but it has been confirmed the call was a hoax. It was computer generated and was also made to different counties across the State of Tennessee.
“Per Sheriff Chad Mullins, once the call was received, members of the HCSO were immediately dispatched to the school and found everyone to be safe.”
In a separate incident, SRO and staff at Maury Middle School were notified of an potential school threat on social media.
Investigators with the Criminal Investigation Division identified a student at another school as the person who had made the social media post.
That student has been expelled and charges into this threats are likely in the coming days.
The Dandridge Police Department also conducted extra patrols at the school until the student/suspect was identified.
This was an isolated incident and was not related to the false report of a shooting at Jefferson County High School.
