A Newport man was arrested twice on two separate incidents this past week in Cocke County.
Shannon Dale Gann, 48, was charged Tuesday, April 25 with driving on a revoked license, violation of light law, failure to provide proof of insurance and theft of property less than $1,000. He was also charged Thursday with theft of property.
According to reports from the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office, while patrolling the area of West U.S. Highway 25/70, Dep. Jacob Sutton, saw a vehicle, driven by Gann, that had a driver side headlight out. During a traffic stop, Gann produced an ID only card and told deputies that his license was revoked, which was confirmed by a records check. Gann’s license was revoked in 2017 for failure to pay fines. Gann was unable to provide current proof of insurance. The records check also revealed that Gann had an active warrant for theft under $1,000.
On Thursday, deputies were called to Helton’s Electric on U.S. Highway 25E for a theft. Scotty Helton reported that sometime during the overnight, someone had taken his Kubota excavator and trailer. Video footage showed that Gann allegedly committed the theft using a Chevrolet SUV, walked out of video range and allegedly hit the camera.
The tag on the truck came back to Geraldine Ensley, mother of Lethan and Shannon Gann.
She told deputies that both sons had access to the truck, but was unaware if either had taken it. Lethan didn’t match the description of the man in the video and was ruled out.
In an interview with Shannon Gann, he said that the man in the video was not him and that he was at home during the incident.
After deputies showed pictures taken from the video, Shannon Gann admitted that he had taken the trailer and excavator because he was “running short on money.” The trailer and excavator were found at a Bayberry Way residence. Shannon Gann was placed into custody.
